Joseph Lawrence Travis, Sr., age 84 of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2017. He was born in Wilkes Barre, PA on August 26, 1933 to Thomas and Mary Travis. Joe was married to Lois Evelyn Mullen Travis for 59 years. Joe was a successful sales manager and worked for Montgomery Wards for over 25 years, then became self-employed as a custom framer and sold custom window treatments. Joe and Lois loved to travel, especially taking ocean cruises, and he enjoyed reminiscing about the good times they had together on their trips. Joe also loved to talk about his trip to Australia with his son, Joe, Jr. and the cruise they took with their daughter and grandkids. Joe also loved the years that he was a marathon runner and bicycled long distances, and said those were the best years of his life.

Joe was honored to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.

Joe will always be remembered as being kind and fair, and quick to laugh. He always looked at life in a positive way, saw the best qualities in people, and found goodness in everyday things. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary Travis, and his brother Tommy Travis.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 59 years, Lois Evelyn Mullen Travis; his son Joseph L. Travis, Jr. and Mary Ann Travis of Houston, TX including three stepsons - Timothy Birken and wife Marianne, Michael Birken and wife Leah, and Kyle Birken and wife Amy; and one great-grandson Jack Travis Birken; his daughter Ann Lynn Mackie and her husband Randall J. Mackie of Silver City, NM; grandson Michael B. Dowdy of Austin, TX; granddaughter Megan E. Dowdy Payne and husband Eric Payne of Aberdeen, SD; great-granddaughters Presley Lynn Payne and Kylie Jo Payne; and his brother John Travis of Baltimore, MD.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2017 from 9 am to 10 am at Forest Park Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer, Houston, Texas, with chapel services from 10 am to 11 am, and internment to follow at Forest Park Cemetery.
